QTICM 17 - MPEG-Playback Hardware and Software Requirements (1-Aug-95)

Q What hardware/software is needed to play an MPEG-compressed QuickTime movie?

A The only MPEG card currently available for the Mac is from the Wired company, but Apple plans to release an MPEG card for the Macintosh 630 series soon (this card also requires the tuner card). QuickTime 2.0 or later is also required. Apple doesn't do software decompression yet, so you need hardware support for decompression. However, Apple is developing an MPEG-decompression solution for PowerPC systems.

For QuickTime for Windows, you need an MPEG card that supports all of the OM-1 Open-MPEG driver APIs. The read-from-buffer API is especially critical, since some of the OM-1-compliant cards don't handle this feature yet.
